Design Story
Clasina had our Maori style phoenix tattoo and wished to extend it onto the whole shoulder in the same style.
We shaped the integration parts like flames to symbolize the adversities from which the phoenix was born, her new start.
Important people she lost are symbolized in the flames, with a braid
for union and the dog teeth pattern representing protection as they are
now her guardian angels.
Protection is also represented by the teeth of taniwha.
Each one has a black part next to them as well, to symbolize pō,
darkness and the world beyond.
The same black element is next to two smaller koru below the double spiral (marriage) and all these parts are separated from the rest by two ahuahu o Mataora patterns, which represent a path full of challenges.
On the top part, above the phoenix, there are two koru for her daughters along with their initials, EC and CC, as they were her fixed point, who kept her going, and the breath of life next to them symbolizes both the life she gave them and the life they gave her.
The path to knowledge on the back part represents always learning.
The whole integration recalls a twist as a symbol of eternal union.
