Design Story

The symbol we used as a basis for this tattoo, requested by 5 friends who want to have a shared tattoo to symbolize their friendship, is an Adinkra design called "ese ne tekrema", or "the teeth and the tongue", and it represents a strong bond, interdipendence.

We isolated the central motif and repeated it 5 times, so that each one of the 5 friends can colour one of the patterns in a slightly different colour, e.g. as we did in the picture: this way the tattoo remains the same for all of them, but each friend has a small difference to distinguish it, symbolizing the individual inside the group.
