A Buddha, or Awakened, is someone whom, through enlightenment, leaves Samsara behind, quitting the eternal cycle of rebirths and reaching perfection. On this account he is often portraited meditating on a lotus flower (a symbol of perfection and overcoming of adversities), or with a lotus flower in their hands, as in this case.
