Design Story

This Polynesian style manta tattoo was designed for Pete as an extension to his Pananu (flowing) tattoo.

The tail of the manta is shaped by a row of birds for voyage, leading to the flight of the albatross that represents long voyages with safe return.
In the middle, the frigate bird and the canoe are symbolic of discovery and adventure, which take place equally on land and in the ocean (mountains and waves on the two sides).
Tiki eyes and shark teeth symbolize protection.

On one side, the hammerhead shark with a warrior in it (strength and tenacity) reminds to never give up on things that matter (the stepping stones).

On the other side, the Marquesan cross within a sun symbolizes the harmony and joy he finds in nature, while the braid is a symbol of unity, sharing these moments with family.

The colored image below helps identifying the individual elements in the integration, and the image below shows how the manta integrates the Pananu whale shark:
