Design Story

This feminine Polynesian tattoo for the arm and shoulder was prepared for Emily.

The moray eel and opposing waves (which remain on the back of the shoulder, in the past) symbolize the difficulties she had to face, with the braid (family union) to help keep them away, leading to favorable waves and a new start (the koru).

The whale symbolizes nurturing and it has her close family in the center, with a row of people below them representing her extended family, and a turtle to symbolize her ohana bringing a new stability (the stepping stones).

The pectoral fin of the whale is shaped by a manta, a symbol of beauty and freedom, and we placed some elements in it to represent strength, courage (spearheads), and tenacity (the hammerhead shark motif), which will bring joy (the sun), balance, and harmony (the Marquesan cross).

The breath of life symbolizes this new life, much like the koru represents a new start.

The last part represents her voyage from now on, prosperous (fish) and protected by the gecko (also a symbol of health).

Shark teeth symbolize adaptability and strength, and protection in water.
