Design Story

Andrei requested a Maori styled design that would represent a worldmap shaped like a manta, for his upper back. We stylized a bit the edges of the continents so that they could better fit the design, which is formed by elements kept separated by koru (life, new beginning), mango pare (hammerhead shark: determination, tenacity and strength) and double spiral (eternity, meeting) motifs. We filled the elements with the traditional colours used for decorating tissues, in order to make clear the separation between the continents and the main islands from the decorative parts; as a tattoo the elements may have more traditional fillings, perhaps keeping two different styles for the lands and for the seas and oceans.
